Okay, I'm bored, so I'm gonna add another entry...
I got to watch the "Making of" special features on the Back To The Future Trilogy last week, it was really interesting! One of my favorite parts was on Part III, the actor that plays Biff is once again covered in manure, and he says to us, "Children, this is the glamor of Hollywood! Come children! Come to California! Come be an actor, live the glamor!" LOL!
Anyone who thinks being an actor is easy is wrong. For example, I was an extra on "Alex & Emma" the last day of filming (Dec 12th, 2002). The last scene we filmed was Kate Hudson at the bus stop in the rain, she slips into the puddle and everything falls out of her purse, she's groping around in the rain trying to collect all her stuff. We filmed that scene at 1:30 am, and it was barely 50F outside, it was icy cold. So Kate was standing in the rain without an umbrella, and then falling into the puddle in 50 degree weather. Kate Hudson's stand in had it made though, she got to kneel on a blanket, and they turned the rain off for her.
If you want an easy acting job, be a background extra. You get paid $54 (non-union, I think union extras get twice that) for any amount of time you work up to 8 hours and then after that you get overtime like a normal job. You can almost always count on a 12+ hour day. As extras, you spend most of that 12 hours sitting in holding. Then when you are called to the set, usually you just walk from one point to the other point, turn around and do it over again and again and again. And that's all there is to it. BUT, non-union extras have to wear one, bring 2-3 wardrobe options. Which means you have to drag almost your entire closet with you to the set. Then you show all your options to the wardrobe crew, and they tell you which one outfit to wear. If there are only a few extra's working, they might do your hair and makeup, but usually they don't.
So that's pretty much what being a background extra is all about.
